Canoeing is truly a sport for all. ..no matter what your age or ability participating in canoe sport is both possible and pleasurable

Paddle - Ability

Paddle-Ability is a term and concept developed by the British Canoe Union (BCU) to address the issue of participation in canoe sport and recreation by people with a disability. Reading Canoe club supports the BCU in promoting "canoeing for all" and is endeavouring to ensure that opportunities for participation in mainstream activities and events are available and accessible for canoeists with a disability.

Paddle-Ability focuses on ability rather than disability.

Reading Canoe Club

Reading Canoe Club believes that:-

Its key role is to promote the sport of canoeing for all and that all levels of participation from beginners to experts should be catered for. Special attention will be paid to the needs of young people, women and people with disabilities.

Reading Canoe Club is based in The Warren, Caversham, and has for over 45 years been a strong feature of the sporting activities in Reading, the Southern Region, Nationally and Internationally. The Club has concentrated on developing the sports of kayaking and canoeing thus incorporating the six competitive disciplines and the recreational aspects of canoesport. The Club has formed close links with the local community and is increasing its links with local schools.

Reading Canoe Club has its own grounds on the banks of the River Thames. The club has extensive modern facilities which include showers, club room, weights room and boat storage.

With the new facility the Club is able to offer full membership to disabled canoeists and implement a training and activity programme for them. At the moment we are restricted on places due to the need for specialised equipment and greater numbers of coaches. However, we do have a group of disabled participants and a couple of disabled members. We are now trying to purchase more equipment for them as well as organising a disabilities endorsement course to enable more people to get qualified to support our initiative.
