Juniors gain International Success at Tremolat

Our very own Tom Daniels was at the forefront of the British Canoe Union’s assault on honours at the World Cup Marathon competition at Tremolat in France (27-30 May). Of the twelve medals available to junior paddlers, six were won by the British team. Tom scored gold in the K2 (twin seat kayak) event with partner Ben Brown from Elmbridge and Bronze in the single seat K1 event. Younger brother Andrew was also in the team, winning silver for second place in the K2 race.

This was the latest in a string of international appearances for Tom, who in the last twelve months has represented Britain at the Junior World Championships in both Marathon and Sprint disciplines. It was Andy’s first outing at this level, but there will be many more to come, as he still has two more years of junior competition ahead.

Tom and Andy are expected to be selected for the upcoming Sprint regatta in Bochum, as are Alison and Rohan. This is the final trial and practice event before selection of the team for the junior European Sprint Championships in Poznan.

BosbaanReading Juniors at the Bosbaan

Pip Ede and Amoret King were prominent in an extremely successful weekend for the British Canoe Union development squad in Amsterdam. The under-14 team of eight boys and girls achieved the astonishing feat of winning every medal on offer in the K1 (single seat kayak) events at the Bosbaan regatta. Pip took gold in the 1000, 500 and 200 metre events and led the K4 to gold in the 500 metre race. Amoret, the youngest paddler in the team, took silver and two bronzes over the same distances. She also won a bronze medal in K4 500m where the girls attained a fine third place in the more difficult under-18 event.

Conditions were variable, generally cloudy and cool with much wind on the Saturday. Fortunately, though gusty the winds were generally from behind the paddlers.

This was Pip’s third foreign trip with the development squad, winning at least one gold medal on each occasion. His recorded PB’s in the 200 (44.11) and 500 (1:57.33). Racing with regular partner Neil Williams of Royal, they also recorded a very fine best ever K2 500m time of 1:44.37. This won them eighth place in the under-18 “A” final.

This was Amoret’s first trip, though there are likely to be many more. In addition to her three under-14 medals, she also raced under-18 K4 (see above) and under-18 K2 500m. Together with Olivia Churchill, she came sixth in the “A” final in a time of 2:10.57.

Reading Juniors at Bochum

Four of Reading’s top juniors competed in GB colours at the 52nd annual Ruhr regatta in Bochum. Although always a major event on the canoeing calendar, this year it was also a perfect race preparation for those paddlers selected for the European Junior Championships to be held in Poznan. These included Tom Daniels, who with regular K2 partner Ben Brown contested both the 500 and 1000m two seat events. The pair had a very successful regatta, reaching Final “A” in both events, 6th in 500 and an excellent 4th in the 1000. This was their highest placing to date at a major international regatta.

Andrew Daniels had a tougher time in the K4 events, where his boat managed 6th and 4th respectively in the 500 and 1000 “B” final races. A relatively new crew, comprising: Andy, Chris Sears of Wokingham, Michael Owen and Allan Spencer, they found the competition from more experienced and practiced contenders difficult.

Our two other paddlers: Alison Galloway and Rohan Battison also participated in a K4 race, but in the girl’s under-16 category. Their boat achieved a creditable 7th place overall in the 500 metre event. They also raced in the two K1 distances, both reaching the semis in both events. Alison went on to qualify for final “B” at the longer distance.

Ro, Pip, Alison, AmoretJuniors at the National Sprint Regatta

Reading Paddlers, following on from international success in recent weeks, claimed multiple honours at the National Sprint Canoeing Championships at the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont. Coach David Coulson led an experienced band of six juniors (and three seniors) in a concerted drive for national success.

Conditions were highly variable, though mostly poor or dreadful. The wind on Saturday was sometimes very difficult, both strong and from the wrong direction. Real fortitude was required from both paddlers and support crews. Major concern was keeping enough kit dry. Eventually, the tumble dryer in the centre gave up the ghost. Conditions on Sunday were generally more amenable but hardly ideal.

The Daniels brothers both booked important results. For the most part, Tom elected not to race as a junior, but instead took on the full might of Britain’s Olympic team in the senior competition. This resulted in a superb second place behind recent European medallists Wynne and Darbydowman in the K2 1000. Equally impressive was fifth place in a hotly contested K1 1000 which featured two strong Olympic medal contenders in Ben Fouhy of New Zealand and Tim Brabants of Great Britain. In his less favoured 500 metre distances, Tom achieved 1st place in Final “B” of the K1 and fifth in the K2 with partner Ben Brown.

Pip & TomThe pair teamed up with fellow World Class Start paddlers Paul Wycherley (WEY) and Stuart Hastings (CLM) to win gold in both under-18 K4 events.

In the absence of Tom from the other under-18 races, younger brother Andrew stepped in to defend both family and club honour. Despite being only 15 years old, Andy Daniels almost completed a clean sweep of all four K1 and K2 Gold medals, missing only the K1 500 by the smallest possible margin of one hundredth of a second. Andy also claimed silver in both K4 races.

Another multiple champion, in the under-14 age group, was Pip Ede. He ended the weekend with six national championships and a further three silver medals. In addition to the blue riband 500 metre K1 and K2 events, he and K2 partner Ben Parfitt of Westel also claimed the 1000 metre gold. The pair teamed up with various partners, including Stuart Bennett of Wokingham Canoe Club, to win K4 titles at under-14, under-16 and under-17 level.

Perhaps the most remarkable result was the silver in the K2 Long Distance race. Following a clash of paddles on the first turn, Pip and Ben capsized. They swam the boat to the shore, righted and emptied it before rejoining the race in a distant last position. In an absolutely storming paddle over the final 2k they overtook every boat but two, the last just before the finish. At the subsequent boat weighing, the second place boat was disqualified, leaving Pip and Ben with an extremely unlikely but highly deserved second place.

Amoret, Alison, Pip, RoAmoret, racing in the girls under-14 age group, was another prolific winner. She achieved gold at all three K4 distances (500, 1000 and 2500) paddling with fellow internationals Walker (ROY), Dougall (LBZ) and Whitehead (CLM). These four girls also featured strongly in all K1 and K2 events, with Amoret’s final haul being 5 silvers from 5 races (K1 500, K1 1000, K2 500, K2 1000 and K2 Long Distance). She paddled K2 with new partner Katie Whitehead and they proved to be the only pairing capable of giving the established Dougall/Walker duo a race.

Under-16 girls Rohan Battison and Alison Galloway also ended the weekend with a haul of medals. Together they won u16 titles in the K2 Long Distance, K4 500 and K4 1000 events. Eschewing the easy option, they contested the under-18 age group in the important K2 500 and 1000 races, resulting in an excellent silver in the latter. Being light and relying more on technique than power, Rohan always suffers when conditions are bad. Nonetheless, her best K1 result was fourth in the under-16 500. Alison achieved silver in the 1000 and Long Distance under-16 finals. She would probably have featured strongly in the “500” final, but failed to make the start on time. Oops!
