Newsletter Oct 2001

Cape Town   Hello again! Now back from South Africa, I thought it about time to keep you up to date with the summer's results and the plans for the winter ahead. I'll stick a proper report about my trip on the website soon! It seems like the club had an excellent summer with the sprint champs and the Haslers. Try and spot which pictures in the newsletter are from my trip, not from around the club.

Let's have an excellent winter's training in order to whip some butt next year. Enjoy yourself,

Peter.
International Success

Since the last newsletter, selections for the GB team were: World Sprint Championships: Abi Cattle. World Marathon Championships: Abi Cattle, Tour de Gudena: Tom Daniels (2nd). Well done to all of those who raced at Stockton in the veteran classes and our medallists: Sue Gray & Jean Boatman.

Racking

David CoulsonBrian Craigie and David Coulson have now completed the first stage of the racking. Cheers! The second stage will be completed at a later date. Please sign the sheets on the racks to show who's boat is stored where.

Thefts

Unfortunately there have been more thefts - of credit cards - from the changing rooms. PLEASE do not leave valuables in the changing rooms. ALWAYS lock the club when you are on the water. Combination locks will be put on the changing room doors to try and stop any passing thieves if the main door is open.

Presentation College

A warm welcome to Presentation College who have joined with us recently. They will be using our facilities during the day-time. We hope that they will enjoy training at the club and that some of the pupils will stay in the sport - perhaps as the medallists of the future. Welcome aboard.

Sprint Club Championships

Congratulations to the team of keen paddlers who ventured up to the wild and barren lands of Nottingham. A well planned attack and some excellent performances gained us a 2nd place overall in the club championships. Sue Gray did well in men's vet A. Well done to our Racing Captain - David Coulson for organising the troops. I was very impressed to hear of the club's success. I hope next year everyone will be marking the date in their diaries ready to win it.

    AGM: 14th November 7.30pm

The Frontage: as you can see, this is being done as we speak (at last I hear you cry).

Are you a budding journalist? Your club needs you. We must continue to get reports in to the Reading Chronicle and Evening Post to keep up our public image. Let me know if you are interested.

Please pay your membership on time to avoid problems with the accounts. Delay in payment WILL results in your keycard being de-activated.

Circuit training on Thursday nights has started. Run first at 6:30, then in the gym for 7:00pm. Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough.

And remember: PLEASE turn the lights off & lock up if you're last out.A rhino with the horn

Gail BattisonYouth Events

Congratulations

This has been a good summer for Reading Youth paddlers. At the National Sprint Championships in July, Rohan & Alison got silver in K2 500m and 3K, and Rohan got silver in K1, 3K. Sam Watson got a bronze in the men's paddle ability for points scored over the weekend. And Tom's list of achievements too many to list!

This was followed by another good weekend at the National Marathon Championships, in Norwich. Tom got the gold for boys U16 K2, Rohan got the gold for U14 K2, and the bronze for U14 K1.

Our final team event, and the most successful to date, was the Interclub Sprints in September, where as a team Reading came 3rd. Leander & Andy had a storming K2 distance race, where they had a brilliant finish to get first place. Alison proved the art of washing hanging is hers when she pipped Rohan to the post in the girls D distance race, and got the most junior points for our club.

In other races and events, Pip retained his Acorn trophy for the lightening event at Thames Valley Circuit, with Amoret coming second. Amoret competed in her first div 9 race at Marlow, and got first placed K2 females, with myself.

All these success have led to a few promotions, Leander up to div 6, Rohan to div 7 and Tom now div 2. With the possibility of imminent promotions for both Alison and Pip.

Grand Prix Regatta Series: A series of sprint regatta races held at various clubs throughout the
summer. Each carries points to a final, separated into sex and age categories. Tom got 1st U16 boys, Alison got 3rd U14 girls .

Training

Due to the nights getting darker, and the clocks changing, youth paddling will now be Saturdays 11.00, with a circuit session with Brian in the gym on Wednesdays 5.30-6.30.

Paddlesport

We have two youth teams in for this winters paddlesport events, the first being the K4 event at Reading the other week, where Reading got the 1st place team trophy. A list of future events will be on the youth notice board, and on the web site.
