BitsYou can get the results from Pangbourne (a couple of weeks ago) Last week's Windsor results are also available, but they've got some obvious mistakes (people shown as retired, who weren't) so maybe leave it another week or so. This years Yak Exe Descent is palnned for Sunday 19 November, strting from the normal spot at The Salmon Ponds, Tiverton and finishing as usual at the Quay in Exeter. One again there will be classes for Racing K1s and K2s, Down River Racers, Touring Kayaks, Slalom Kayaks and Canoes, with many sub divisions in each class. To date we have sent out almost 500 entry details and forms but anyone wishing to get a copy can down load from the webb site of YAK EQUIPMENT our sponsors see www.yak-paddling.com At present the unexpected wet weather has topped up the river nicely- its a long way away just yet but we are hopeful for a good level of water. Interclub Regatta ReportFirst of all - thanks to everyone on the Reading Sprint Team throughout this year, and well done for some excellent racing under fairly extreme conditions! Well done to Matthew Mainprize for his lightning under-12 trophy. Very flash looking cup! There were some great results right through the racing categories - with some very promising performances in the lower divisions. I missed a lot of the races due to trying to keep up with the admin side - but my personal fave was the storming win by the mens A k4 on Sunday. Also worthy of special mention is the valiant All weekend we were battling the elements - with 20mph winds and huge waves along the regatta course. Racing was abandonned on Saturday afternoon for safety reasons - the safety boats couldn't keep up with the number of capsizes. On Sunday racing was suspended for an hour, and then a compromise was reached which allowed us to continue racing but over 200m instead of 500m - with the proviso that anyone that didn't want to race did not have to. The Reading Sprint Team enthusiastically swung back into action and there was some great racing. From a spectator's point of view the 200m distance was great, as we could see the whole of the race from start to finish. So we were 5th. But Sept 2007 had better watch out - we will be back! Hope everyone enjoyed themselves & that the journeys back were OK. Kris PS - only 7 months til April regatta....... |

| 09/03/2006 | WSBWinter weather played its part at the second Waterside race on Sunday. As if a route of nearly eighteen miles from Newbury to Aldermaston Wharf and back wasn’t enough, the course was made more difficult by a sheet of ice that extended from near Heales lock down to Woolhampton lock, requiring a kilometre long portage. Eventually the last boat on the course, an intrepid plastic K2, smashed a path – but by that time the eager beaver early starters had already made a second portage on their way back. Wiki Daniels of Reading continued last week’s good form at Thameside 1 to finish nearly ten minutes clear in the ladies race. Clubmate Alison Galloway, still improving after a long absence from racing, was second - a marked step up from her fifth in the “A” race two weeks ago against much the same paddlers. Cokethorpe School’s Lena Beardsell was fourth and Wokingham’s Samantha Rippington paddled well above her divisional ranking to finish fifth. The Senior K1 was won by Ali Rosier of Bradford on Avon in 2:17:32, but once again this time was improved by Duncan Blythe of Wokingham who recorded 2:17:04 to win the Veterans class in a new course record for the Vets. Reading also claimed the Junior K1 in which Pip Ede followed a plan that was more training session than flat-out race to finish in a modest 2:41:05, ahead of Dean Terry (Wey) and Aaron Jordan (Maidstone). As usual, the K2 classes were more popular than K1 and highly competitive. The Senior K2 was won Purchase and Hissett, once of Pangbourne. The Ladies K2 was won by Lamph and Broughton of Richmond, ahead of Norwich’s Bee and Hunter - victors at Waterside A. Elsewhere the top prizes seem to have been reserved for family groups. Twins Tim and Philip Pearse of Cokethorpe continued their successful preparation this year’s junior DW. They headed a large junior field to finish in 2:28:32. Maycock & Maycock of Exeter (Vets K2), Beard and Beard of Royal (Mixed K2) and Bowditch and Bowditch of Ealing (Junior Vet K2) all won. Reading’s Tom Patterson was third in the Junior Vet with rapidly improving novice partner Jake Holland of Adventure Dolphin. Good to see John Drummond back on the water and competing again after his enforced layoff. [article by Phil Ede] |
