Coaches are strongly encouraged to follow closely the guidelines in the National Training Programme, but be prepared to adapt them to suit the individual requirements of their athletes and their environment.
3. National Lottery & Sports Aid Grants
In order to be considered for Lottery grants and Sport Aid, athletes need to attend the National Profile weekend at Nottingham in October. The performance at that event, along with the season 2002 results and other past performances and the National Junior Coach's (NJC) judgement will be used to form the basis of any recommendation to the Programmes Manager and World Class Management Committee for awards.Individual grants will be awarded in April 2003 following the successful completion of a full winters training programme, attending regional & national winter events as required.
Athletes performance on and off the water will be monitored closely be their individual coaches and Regional Coach will then report progress to the NJC.
Each athlete on the programme will be required to set goals and targets for 2003, with their coach. Talented Junior's will the share this information with their Regional Coach and Junior Elite will agree theirs with the NJC.
Athletes receiving grants must follow the training, testing and competition requirements set by the NJC.
4. Selection of the National Junior Team for 2003
4.1 Overall Strategy
The aim is to select crews that have the best chance of winning medals and performing with distinction at the World Junior Championships. If only a few or no crews achieve the performance guide times then the NJC will use his knowledge and experience, plus information gained through out the year to consider additional crews for recommendation to the selection committee. We will send GB U18 teams to Piestany, Bochum and Japan. With an additional GB U16 team to Bochum.
Following the final selection regatta at Nottingham in July 2003 we will select the World Junior Championships Team.
4.2 Development Regatta's
The development regattas supported by the programme will be bigger teams made up of U17 and younger who are likely to be Selected for the National Team in the next two years. The development regatta's for 2003 are Boulogne, Gent & Sobeka.
4.3 Eligibility
To be eligible for any British Team athletes must hold a British Passport, be a current member of the BCU, must not be 18 before the 1st January 2003, must sign the athletes code of conduct and doping control form.
4.4 Selection
The national junior team is open to all athletes. Athletes are picked on merit of their performance and potential to improve. They will ideally need to demonstrate their individual capabilities and compatibility at different test, trials and regattas. K1 performance, gym and running scores have the highest priority for crew selection. An athlete's performance and progress on both land and water will be monitored on a regular basis. These are the requirements for all who wish to be considered for selection, particularly in crew boats.
If an athlete cannot attend a selection regatta or other tests for medical reasons or any other valid reason the athlete must follow the correct procedure. The NJC must be contacted in the first instance. Failure to comply may result in an athlete being substituted by another athlete who has completed the selection requirements.
Once the World Championships Team is finalised all selected athletes must attend all training camps before the event.
The selection committee is responsible for team selection based on the BCU Selection Policy enclosed with this document.
4.5 Land Based Assessments
The Land Based Assessment should be used to monitor each athlete's improvement over the winter.
All Land based Assessments must be monitored and supervised by suitably qualified coaches.
The gym tests and running are recommended to help monitor each athlete's progress and in particular their strength training and development.
Please send all Land Based Assessments to your Regional Coach within one week of completion of the tests.
Physiological Monitoring
It is intended to develop a physiological testing programme over the coming year. Coaches will be advised accordingly.
4.6 Formal Water Assessments
Invitations to assessments, regattas and training camps will be based on water performances and supported by land based assessments. Invitations may also be extended to candidates with future potential whom the NJC feels will benefit from the experience.
Candidates for camps are required to perform at the National Assessment Days.
The dates for these assessments are as follows:
Feb 9th 2003 National Testing Day Personal Assessment
This will include water, gym and run. The assessment will be used to determine winter training progress against targets agreed in October.
March 8th 2003 Crew Boat Assessment Trial
Water only 2000m, 200m in K1. Top 12boys, 6girls and 2 canoe will be selected if up to standard. These will then make up crew boats to race at April Regatta.
Coaches are requested to use their judgement when entering their athletes for the above events and should not send their athletes for experience.
Selection Regattas
The following regattas are selection events for 2003 athletes wishing to be selected are required to attend. Only in the most exception circumstances will an exemption be made with the agreement of the NJC.
April Regatta 12-13th Selection for Piestany & Boulonge
May Regatta 9 10th Selection for Bochum & Gent
July Regatta 5 6th Final Selection for Japan & Sobeka.
Performances at all the regattas above and International events will determine the make-up of the National Team. Selected crews may race in Senior National events at the discretion of the NJC.
Training Camps
A number of training camps by invitation only will be organised through out the year with the intention of getting leading athletes to train together. Athletes are expected to make themselves available for these camps.
Talented Junior Camps:
Talented Junior Camps will be regionally based, contact your Regional Coach for dates etc.
5. Team Operations at Events
The selection of staff for events is the responsibility of the NJC and the Team Manager.- Coaches are most likely to be appointed from amongst those who have worked closely with the Programme throughout the season.
- Coaches will be allocated responsibility at events bearing in mind the particular requirements of each crew and the particular expertise of each Coach.
- Coaches of successful athletes should not assume they will automatically accompany their athletes to International events
- Parents are welcome to support the team, but are requested to only access public areas, not the team area.
