What to bring and wear?
While canoeing, it is important that clothing protects the body but does not restrict movement. Clothing that gets heavy when wet, like jeans and woollens, are unsuitable. Wetsuits are mostly unnecessary. For the majority of conditions, layers of light, fitted clothing that will dry quickly when damp are most suitable. Thermals are ideal. Beginners should bring:
Shorts or leggings.
T-shirts and thin long-sleeve tops.
Cagoule or other short light windy-proof top.
Trainers, plimsolls or other suitable footwear.
A change of clothes and a towel
Do you do any courses for children to learn canoeing or kayaking?
Jniors are well catered for at Reading Canoe Club, and there are number of different options. The best place to Saturday is to come along to one of our novice session on start morning. Where your child will be able to go with other children of the same ability, from there you can both learn about Reading Canoe Club and find out whether the club and the sport are for you.
Once interested you can progress into other session and activities within the club.

Do I need to be able to swim?
It would be an advantage to be able to swim 50 metres but this does not necessarily prohibit those that cannot but please inform the instructor if you are a weak or nervous swimmer. Confident in and around water is more important. You will be expected to wear a buoyancy aid for most activities.
